•   Comprehensive recycling strategies

Citizens Energy Services helps manage all aspects of the project development process.  After initial energy-saving actions are taken, we can help customers partner with local community and waste management service providers to further optimize environmental sustainability.  This comprehensive approach to energy efficiency helps to reduce an organization’s energy consumption, saving money and minimizing adverse effects to the planet’s climate.

Carbon Footprint Assessments and Energy Audits

Citizens Energy Services helps customers take an active role in the fight against global warming by reducing their carbon emissions.  The first step towards achieving meaningful carbon reduction is a carbon inventory of your business, organization or home.  This inventory, or carbon footprint, is defined as a "measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, as measured in units of carbon dioxide."

In this analysis, Citizens Energy Services directly measures the CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels, including on-site energy consumption, purchased electricity or steam, and transportation.  Additionally, we can measure the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of the products and services an organization uses.

With this inventory in hand, our customers are armed with the tools they need to develop a climate action plan to reduce or even neutralize green house gas emissions.  We identify high-energy consumption areas and associated carbon emissions and provide energy efficiency optimization strategies.

Clean Renewable Power:  Solar PV, Solar Thermal, and Wind

Given the right conditions, distributed power systems using clean technologies such as solar and wind can represent a very efficient solution for facility owners.  Customers can benefit from a clean, reliable source of power that provides a hedge against potentially volatile prices for conventional energy.  Leveraging our extensive experience with developing renewable energy installations, Citizens Energy Services stands ready to assess our clients' real estate assets for the best opportunities to integrate today’s cleanest and 'greenest' energy technologies.

From small on-site wind and solar systems, to larger utility scale projects, Citizens Energy Services is the right partner to help organizations meet renewable energy and corporate sustainability objectives.  Our deep industry knowledge and strategic relationships with top suppliers in the industry allow us to manage all aspects of project development activity while positioning organizations to take advantage of the promise of clean energy, today and in the future, at an affordable cost.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV)

Citizens Energy Services can implement the latest photovoltaic power systems to convert sunlight directly into electricity to power buildings and machinery.  Citizens PV power systems enable our customers to generate some or all of their daily electrical energy demand on their own property.  Net metering rules vary by jurisdiction but may allow excess generation to be transferred to other accounts while for electricity beyond the solar PV system can be met from other renewable sources or utility transmission.

Citizens Energy Services works with clients to select a PV system that optimizes costs and benefits.  We assess our customers' need for backup power and perform an analysis of onsite solar potential.  We then identify areas for solar arrays with sufficient structural stability and proper orientation and exposure to sunlight.  Citizens leverages state and federal incentives and rebates to extract maximum value for our customers.  Our design and engineering professionals design top of the line systems that minimize electrical losses due to wiring, fuses, switches, and inverters.  We encourage you to consider our PV engineering as an integral component of your next energy efficiency project.

Solar Thermal

Solar thermal technology can be an efficient technology to improve the heating and cooling efficiency of buildings.  Low temperature solar thermal systems collect solar radiation for water and space heating of homes, offices or classrooms.  In colder climates, a passive solar system can reduce heating costs by up to 40 percent.  In the United States, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems account for over 25 percent of the energy used in commercial buildings and nearly half of the energy used in residential buildings.  Citizens Energy Services is ready to assist you in improving your solar heating, cooling, and ventilation technologies to offset a significant portion of this energy demand.

Wind

Citizens Wind is a nationally-recognized leader in wind project development, and is developing a portfolio of wind projects throughout the U.S. and Canada with potential installed generation capacity of more than 1,500 megawatts of electricity – enough energy to power about 450,000 homes.  Citizens Wind has successfully completed development on two wind projects, and is continually working on projects in all phases of development.  Citizens Energy Services has at its disposal, a complete wind project development team whose experience is thus directly available to its energy services customers. Few other companies can truly make this claim. If your organization is wondering whether or how a wind energy project might fit within the context of its overall energy strategy, Citizens Energy is the clear choice.

Many facility operators purchase significant quantities of natural gas to heat water and also purchase full requirements electricity from the local utility.  If this describes your situation, a gas-fired cogeneration system may be worthy of consideration.

By their nature, gas-fired water heaters are an inefficient use of high-grade natural gas.  In a typical hot water system, natural gas is combusted at 2,500º F, only to produce water at between 150-200º F.  This is inherently wasteful of the high-quality energy contained in natural gas, and is thus an inefficient way to spend money.

Instead, consider a system where the thermal energy in natural gas delivers that same quantity of water at 150-200º F, along with high quality electricity that is able to offset some or all of the electricity that is otherwise purchased from the grid at additional cost.  With cogeneration, natural gas fuel is used twice, once to power an efficient engine, and again when the ‘waste heat’ from the engine is recaptured for water heating.  In most cases, any excess electricity generated can be sold back to the grid, further offsetting operating costs.

With an appropriately-sized cogeneration system installed, facility operators with substantial thermal and electrical loads can receive electricity and hot water for close to the price of grid-purchased electricity alone.

Cogeneration Benefits & Features Typical Cogeneration Installations
High reliability Hospital and healthcare facilities
Low cost Schools, colleges and universities
Meets combined thermal and electrical loads Hotels and motels
Low maintenance requirement Apartment and condominium complexes

Cogeneration is not always the right solution for all situations.  Our professionals recognize the need to match a cogeneration system to the specific circumstances and requirements found at the host facility.  We can help customers analyze the cogeneration opportunity at their facilities, and if appropriate, size a system from 50kW to 1MW or larger, based on the unique thermal and electrical load requirements present.  Turnkey installations are our specialty.

Approximately one-third of the world’s carbon emissions are produced by the consumption of fossil fuels for transportation.  Citizens Energy can help establish goals and benchmarks for reducing transportation emissions associated with commercial or institutional facilities.

There are many strategies available to neutralize these transportation-related emissions.  Begin by replacing vehicles with those that run on alternative fuels like electricity or biofuels.  Gain or provide improved access to alternative or public transportation.  Encourage and incentivize employees to use carpooling and other vehicle-sharing programs.

Buildings are responsible for 40 percent of worldwide energy flow and material use.  Our green-building trained professionals can make your next construction or renovation sustainable.  Citizens Energy Services provides the tools for timely energy conservation measurement, design, implementation and financing.

The Citizens Energy Services green building team can significantly reduce a building’s operation costs, minimize consumption of natural resources, and improve the health and productivity of building occupants.
