Shelters
The Shelter Winter Heating Assistance Program provides heating assistance to shelters that use oil to heat their building. Citizens Energy, in partnership with CITGO, will help to pay the cost of heating oil deliveries to qualified shelters each heating oil season with the understanding that the program relies on set funding and is not a guarantee. Last winter, 245 shelters participated in this program.
An application form, accompanied by a copy of the shelter’s 501c3, must be submitted for each individual shelter.
Shelter Winter Heating Assistance Program in Action
The St. Vincent de Paul Society in Juneau, Alaska runs an emergency homeless shelter that receives heating assistance from Citizens Energy Corporation and CITGO Petroleum. The budget savings from the winter allowed the shelter to provide other services to families in need:
Here are a few examples:
- St. Vincent’s was able to fill the oil tank of a terminally ill cancer patient, who’s had his oil deliveries discontinued for lack of payment.
- When an 87 year old homeless woman arrived on a ferry from Washington, St. Vincent’s put her up in a hotel because their own shelter was filled to capacity.
- The daughter of an immigrant family who has lived in the U.S. for 15 years was assaulted and afraid to go to the police. St. Vincent’s stepped in to help with an immigration attorney and legal advice.
- St. Vincent’s helped a mother who needed to accompany her child to Anchorage for an operation, with airfare & expenses.
- Fifty food and 100 thrift store vouchers were distributed at a Project Homeless Connect event in January.
“
Citizen's Energy doesn't just deliver heating oil, you allow us to hand out hope every single day.” -St. Vincent DePaul Society
”Without your generous assistance not only would we not be able to help hundreds of individuals with daily needs for survival, but we could face closure of our shelter.” -St. Vincent DePaul Society
